Social work student and first-generation college scholar, Valentina Gil, once believed a college degree was out of reach. Gil credits Rutgers Future Scholars (RFS) for making her education possible, from middle school mentoring to a full college scholarship. She will soon graduate from Rutgers University–New Brunswick, pursuing her master’s degree in social work and carrying forward her passion for immigrant rights.

A Pathway to Higher Education

Gil’s first glimpse of a university campus came after seventh grade, when RFS introduced her and fellow scholars to Rutgers. The experience validated her potential and made the idea of college tangible. For her mother—who couldn’t initially navigate financial aid forms—RFS provided invaluable support in understanding the process. Gil eventually double-majored in social work and political science, remaining closely involved with RFS through the dReam Team and benefiting from résumé assistance provided by program advisors.

Championing Undocumented Communities

Beyond academics, Gil became deeply engaged in activism. Through UndocuRutgers, she helped secure an assistant dean position dedicated to supporting undocumented students. She also interned remotely with the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, where she witnessed the complex realities faced by undocumented youth. Eager to use her voice, Gil now aspires to influence global policies that shape immigration and educational equity.

Facing homelessness before her junior year and balancing multiple jobs, Gil nonetheless persisted. Her achievement stands as proof that with a strong network and personal resolve, even the most daunting goals can be realized.
