This is an article summary originally titled, Rahway’s Rutgers Future Scholars Explore Government, Earn City Council Recognition, from Rho Eta Sigma News by RHS Journalism Student, Nicolas Navarro.
The Rutgers Future Scholars (RFS) program in Rahway is a five-year academic initiative that supports first-generation, low-income students who show strong academic potential. Launched in 2008 and active in Rahway since 2016, RFS promises tuition assistance at Rutgers University for participants who complete the program and are accepted to the university.

Ahead of the winter break, RFS students took part in Rahway’s Student Government Day, gaining firsthand knowledge of how their local government functions. During a mock City Council meeting, participants assumed the various roles responsible for running such meetings, learning about the public decision-making process. They also visited Quilla (by Sabor Peruano), a local restaurant, where they met with the owner to discuss the challenges and rewards of starting a small business in Rahway.
In addition, the scholars explored the city’s vibrant arts scene and had the opportunity to interact with Mayor Raymond Giacobbe, who answered questions about community initiatives. Their efforts culminated in a proclamation read by Councilman Jeffrey Brooks and presented by Mayor Giacobbe at a combined Rahway City Council meeting, acknowledging the RFS program’s positive impact on both the students and the Rahway community.

Beyond local governance, RFS participants recently benefited from visits by Merck volunteers, who offered guidance on career paths and led leadership workshops. As the program continues, RFS remains committed to fostering academic success and real-world experiences that prepare Rahway’s youth for bright futures.
